Belagavi Suddi.com, Aug.28: Narendra Mohan, Director National Sugar Institute (NSI) Kanpur, who inaugurated a national level seminar on “Advance technologies for Raw, Refined & Speciality sugar production” , stressed upon the need for sulphur-less sugar production to ensure that there was no ill-effect from the sulphur-contained sugar on the health of its consumers.

The seminar was organised jointly by Belagavi-based S. Nijalingappa Sugar Institute (SNSI) and NSI, Kanpur.

Elaborating on the sugar consumption trends in India and highlighting the rapid growth in industrial consumption of sugar than the table-top consumption, he pointed out at presence of sulphur content in domestic sugar in the range of 30-50 ppm. Considering ill-effects from such sulphur-contained sugar on the health of human beings, he emphasised upon production of Sulphur-less sugar. He also stressed on minimum use of chemicals during processing and hence so that there were no harmful effects on the health of consumers.

Presenting a road map for the Indian sugar industry, he unveiled few innovative technologies for producing such refined/sulphur-less and atural cane sugars without production cost-escalation as a much needed measure towards the healthcare concerns of people.

“We need to produce sugar, which is free from sulphur and chemicals adversely affecting the health of our people,” he said.

SNSI Director R.B. Khandgave Director briefly reviewed existing sugar processing technologies and explicitly highlighted various problems of
sulphitation process and it’s ill-effects in human beings.

Dr.Khandagave said, in India about 90% of the total sugar produced was in the form plantationwhite sugar using double sulphitation process. Development of modern technologies and energy consumption for producing sulphur-less sugar would be reduced drastically. Indian sugar mills should develop flexibility to produce plantation white, VVHP raw, sulphur-less white and refined sugar in the same plant.

Sugar industry ‘ambassador’ Vijaykumar Lodha, a leading industrialist in speciality sugar
delivered an informative speech regarding speciality sugar production and increasing value
added products in sugar industry.

Venkateshwar Rao, CMD of VRL automations also guided the delegates regarding modern steam saving in Sulphurless/Refined sugar production. Dr. M. B. Londhe, Adviser of SNSI welcomed the guest and delegates and discussed the problems in the existing sulphitation process and alternatives for switching over to sulphurless sugar production with minimum capital investment. The inaugural function was followed by technical sessions.

Practices followed for Sulphurless /Refined sugar production at M/s Triveni Engineering, Khatauli, UP and the Modern small scale back end refinery at M/s Maa Rewa sugar, MP were discussed. Mahendra Kumar from NSI presented an informative article on comparative study of various processes for sugar melt clarification. His colleague Mr.Singh presented an informative article on organic sugar.

“In nutshell the Indian sugar industry shall eventually say goodbye to double sulphitation process of sugar production and shall switchover to production of VVHP/Sulphurless/Refined/ Liquid Refined sugar production. Multi product approach shall be followed for playing major role in competitive world market and to grab export opportunities in sugar trade. In addition to this
sugar industry shall also plan to produce speciality sugars and organic sugar, which will help in
value additions and also opens new ways for entering in global sugar market, Dr.Khandagave remarked.

About 100 participants from Karnataka, A.P, U.P and Maharashtra participated in the seminar.
